What Changed in Office 2013

Office 2013 reached general availability in January 2013 and was the first release that dropped Windows XP and Vista — it needs Windows 7 or later. Compared with Office 2010 it added:

  • A flatter, touch-friendly look, with a Touch Mode that spaces out ribbon buttons for tablets.
  • Word Read Mode and PDF editing. Word 2013 can open a PDF and convert it into an editable document (“PDF Reflow”) — handy for occasional edits without a separate PDF editor.
  • Excel Flash Fill, Quick Analysis and Recommended Charts. Flash Fill spots a pattern (for example splitting full names into first and last) and fills the rest of the column for you.
  • One window per workbook in Excel, which makes working across two monitors easier.
  • PowerPoint widescreen by default (16:9) and an improved Presenter View.
  • Saving to OneDrive offered alongside local folders in the Save dialog.

It also removed a few things 2010 had, most notably Microsoft Office Picture Manager and the Clip Organizer.

Support Status

Mainstream support ended on April 10, 2018, and extended support ended on April 11, 2023. Since then there have been no security updates. Microsoft also doesn’t support Office 2013 apps connecting to Microsoft 365 services, so it’s not the right pick for a work mailbox hosted in Microsoft 365.

Windows 10 vs Windows 11

On Windows 10, Office 2013 installs and activates the way it always has. Windows 11 came out after Office 2013 had left mainstream support, and Microsoft never certified the pairing.
