Where It Sits in the Lineup

Office 2016 is the bridge version. It’s the last release that installs on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 — Office 2019 and later require Windows 10 or 11 — and Microsoft supported it on Windows 11 for the rest of its lifecycle. That makes it the practical choice for a PC that has to stay on an older Windows, or for modest hardware where you don’t need the newest features.

Support Status

Mainstream support ended on October 13, 2020, and extended support ended on October 14, 2025. The apps keep working, but Microsoft no longer issues security fixes. For a home computer doing documents and email that’s often acceptable; for a machine handling financial or client records we’d steer you to Office 2024, which is supported until October 2029.
