Printer Printing Blank Pages? Fix It on Windows 10/11

Short answer: Print the printer's own self-test page first — the one it makes from its own buttons, with no computer involved. If that page is blank too, the fault is in the printer or its ink: clean or reseat the inkjet printhead, or pull the shipping seal and reseat the laser toner. If the self-test prints fine but Windows pages come out blank, the problem is on the PC — a corrupt driver, a hung Print Spooler, or a setting like grayscale or Print to File.

A printer printing blank pages is one of the few faults you can pin down with a single test. Before changing any setting, print the printer’s own self-test page — the one it makes from its own buttons, with the computer left out of it entirely. A blank result puts the fault in the printer or its ink; a clean one moves the blame to the PC, where a driver, the spooler, or a stray print setting is quietly sabotaging the job. That one page decides everything that follows.

The one page that tells you where to look

Almost every printer can print a status or configuration page without a computer attached. The trick is usually holding a button while it powers up — Resume or Cancel or the feed button, held for a few seconds as the printer comes on — or, on models with a screen, digging into the menu under Reports, Setup, or Information and choosing something like Printer Status Report or Configuration. The exact combination is printed in the manual, and a search for your model plus “self test page” turns it up in seconds.

What matters is what the page does, not what it says. It’s generated by the printer’s own firmware and never touches Windows. So a page full of text and color bars means the engine, the ink or toner, and the paper path are all healthy — and you can stop suspecting the hardware. A blank one, though, just proved the fault is inside the printer, and nothing you do on the computer will fix it.

While you’re at it, rule out the dumbest cause in thirty seconds: open the document and look at the print preview, not the editing view. A stray page break, a chunk of white text, or content sitting on a hidden layer can leave a real blank page in an otherwise normal file, and it’s mortifying how often a “broken printer” is one empty trailing page the author never noticed. If only some pages come out blank and the rest are fine, that’s almost never the hardware — jump straight to the document and the settings.

The Windows-side half of the test is the built-in test page, and it’s worth running for comparison. On Windows 10 — still on roughly a quarter of desktops, going by Statcounter — open Control Panel, go to Devices and Printers, right-click your printer and choose Printer properties. On Windows 11 the same dialog lives under Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Printers & scanners, then your printer and Printer properties. Now you have two results. Printer self-test blank, Windows page blank: the hardware section below is yours. Printer self-test good, Windows page blank: skip down to the PC section. And the combination that confuses people — printer self-test fine but you never actually checked it — is exactly why I push the self-test first. It’s the only test in this whole list that removes the computer from the equation, and that’s worth more than any single fix.

When the self-test is blank too: it’s the printer

A blank self-test narrows things hard, because now Windows, the driver, and your document are all off the hook. What’s left is the printer putting nothing on the page, and inkjets and lasers fail at that in completely different ways. Sort out which kind you have before you start, because the fixes don’t cross over.

Inkjet: a dry or clogged printhead, nine times out of ten

Liquid ink and tiny nozzles do not like sitting still. Leave an inkjet for a few weeks and the ink in the nozzles starts to dry into a plug; certain colors give up faster than others, which is why a printer can go blank on black while still managing a faint wash of color, or the reverse. A printer that prints daily rarely clogs. One that prints a boarding pass every couple of months is the classic patient.

Start by confirming there’s actually ink. The panel or the printer’s app will show levels, but treat a “full” reading with suspicion — a cartridge can read full and still be plugged, dried, or simply not making contact. Pull each cartridge, look at the print nozzles on the bottom, and reseat it until it clicks. On a brand-new cartridge, the usual culprit is mechanical: the orange clip or the strip of protective tape over the nozzles never came off, or the little vent on top is still sealed. Both stop ink dead.

If ink is present and seated, run the printhead cleaning cycle — once, maybe twice. It’s in the printer’s maintenance menu, or under the Maintenance tab when you open Printing Preferences from that same Devices and Printers window. Run a nozzle check pattern afterward to see which jets are firing. The pattern is the diagnosis: a clean head prints four solid blocks or grids of color; gaps and missing lines show you exactly which nozzles are blocked and whether it’s getting better between cleanings. Two cleanings that leave the same gaps mean a third won’t help either — that head needs soaking, not more automated passes.

Don’t hammer the cleaning button ten times in a row, whatever the panel tempts you into. Each pass dumps a surprising amount of ink into the waste pad, and on some models that pad fills toward its own service limit, so you’ll trade a clog for a different error. For a head that’s been drying for months, the gentler fix depends on the design. Cartridges with the printhead built in — common on entry-level HP and Canon — get the soak under the cartridge itself: rest its nozzles on a folded paper towel dampened with warm distilled water for a few minutes to soften the plug, then reinstall and run one cleaning cycle. Where the head is a fixed part of the printer, as on Epson and most pigment-ink models, leave it alone and let the printer’s own deep-clean or power-clean routine pull fresh ink through. Either way, tap water leaves mineral deposits behind, so distilled is worth the trip.

Laser: the seal, the seating, and the drum

Lasers don’t clog. A laser that self-tests blank is usually a brand-new toner cartridge with its shipping seal still in place — a long plastic strip, often orange or blue, that you pull straight out of the side before installing. Miss it and the toner physically cannot reach the drum. Half the “dead on arrival” toner cartridges I’ve seen still had the strip in.

If the toner’s seated and the seal is out, rock the cartridge gently end to end a few times to redistribute the powder and drop it back in — a cartridge reading low or unevenly filled can print ghostly or blank, and that thirty-second shuffle buys you a few hundred more pages while you order a replacement. Genuinely empty toner prints blank or near-blank no matter what the panel claims, so if the page is faint rather than truly empty, you’re just low.

Seal out, toner seated and not empty, still blank? Now you’re looking at the imaging drum or the transfer roller — the parts that move the toner onto the paper. On cartridges with a built-in drum, a new cartridge settles it. On printers with a separate drum unit, that’s its own consumable with its own life span. Past that point you’re into the printer’s mechanics, and a fresh toner cartridge is a lot cheaper than the afternoon it takes to chase a transfer fault on a cheap laser.

When the self-test prints fine: it’s the PC

A clean self-test flips the whole investigation. The printer works. Something between your application and the printer is handing it an empty job, and there are three usual suspects.

The driver is first and worst. Printer drivers are some of the flakiest software ordinary people are made to deal with, and a half-updated or corrupted one will render a job to nothing before it ever reaches the printer. The spooler is second. The Print Spooler is the Windows service that takes your job, queues it, and feeds it to the printer, and when it corrupts a job mid-flight the page can come out empty. Connection is the quiet third suspect, and it mostly bites wireless setups. A printer handed a new IP address after a router reboot can sit there looking online in Windows while every job is actually being thrown at an address nobody’s listening on — the symptoms read as blank or vanished output rather than an obvious error. The two-minute settings that print blank on purpose

Most guides skip this part, and it’s where a frustrating number of blank-page calls actually end. The printer is fine, the driver is fine, and a setting is doing exactly what it was told.

Open Printing Preferences from Devices and Printers — right-click the printer, Printing preferences — and look at two things. First, color: a document forced to grayscale on a printer whose black cartridge is the dead one will feed and eject blank while the color tanks sit full. Flip it back to color, or replace the black, depending on which way the problem runs. Second, quality: a draft, economy, or toner-save mode set aggressively low can fade a light document into nothing, especially pale grays and thin lines.

Two more hide outside that dialog. Set the printer to “Print to File” — easy to do by accident — and every job gets captured into a .prn file on disk while nothing reaches the paper; check the Ports tab in Printer properties and make sure the real port is ticked, not FILE. And a paper size mismatch — the driver set to A4 while Letter is loaded, or the reverse — can push the content off the sheet entirely, so the page feeds through blank. Match the size in Printing Preferences to what’s actually in the tray.

One specific case earns its own trick: a particular PDF that prints blank while everything else is fine usually has damaged embedded fonts or images. In Adobe Reader, open the print dialog, click Advanced, and tick “Print As Image.” That flattens the page to a bitmap before the driver ever sees the broken content, and it goes through.

When none of it takes

Work all of that and a printer still spitting blank pages is into the awkward residue. Maybe firmware went sideways after an update and broke rendering in a way no setting exposes. Maybe a drum or transfer fault prints one page clean and the next one empty, on and off, with no pattern you can pin down by hand. Or the spooler keeps mangling jobs even after a clean driver reinstall, which usually traces to one specific driver DLL crashing it — and finding that one means reading Event Viewer’s PrintService logs and pulling driver packages out one at a time through Print Server Properties. None of that is risky to try. It’s just slow, fiddly work, the kind a remote technician who’s seen the exact failure before clears in one session instead of losing an afternoon to it.

Printer trouble eats more support time than it looks. Managed-print vendors love citing a Gartner estimate that print problems drive as much as half of all help-desk tickets, and whatever you make of the source, the number tracks with how often these calls actually land.
